Wood’s brilliance shines when it counts

Saving some of their finest performances for games with most on the line is something the best players find a way of doing. That’s just what Theron Wood did for Bodden Town FC in their top of the table clash with Elite SC on 12 March – an effort that gets him the nod as the Cayman Sports Buzz Footballer of the Week presented by Futbolista World.

When Wood is on the attack, defenders are always second-guessing themselves. With his team up 1-0 six minutes from the half, Wood was called upon to take a penalty and did so in expert fashion, driving it hand and low to the keeper’s right, allowing him little chance at a save.

The 27-year-old was a constant bother for Elite, pressing forward whenever he got the ball and even getting into the right spots so his teammates could find him. That was the case in the 50^th minute.

“I didn’t expect the ball to come through but it did and I made up my mind to shoot, so I turned quick time and shot with my right foot, which a lot of defenders don’t expect because they see me use the left a lot,” Wood said, describing the goal that gave him the brace and made an Elite comeback that much more improbable.

In the end, Bodden Town held on for the 4-2 win, their eighth straight in the Cayman Premier League and opened a 10-point lead over Elite atop the table.

“It was a well-deserved three points and we needed those points to keep Elite off us. It was a good win and all my teammates are happy,” he told CaymanSportsBuzz.com.

While the lead is almost insurmountable for any challengers to this season’s title, Wood said he and his teammates aren’t about to celebrate just yet with six games left on the schedule. “We’re playing it one week at a time. Hopefully, we keep the points distance between Elite and win the league.”

Theron Wood enters Futbolista World draw

At a brief ceremony on 16 March, Wood was presented with a certificate, a Futbolista World sports shirt, and a gift certificate to be used toward new gear at Futbolista World. He has also been entered into a draw to win an additional prize from Futbolista World at the end of the season.

Each week, Cayman Sports Buzz will select a player for the Footballer of the Week honour based on their performance in any of the following leagues: Cayman Premier League, CIFA Women’s Premier League, CIFA First Division, CIFA youth leagues and the CUC Primary Football League/Girls Primary Football League.

At the end of the season, Cayman Sports Buzz will be presenting a more substantial award to the Footballer of the Year.
