Big summer for Cayman Islands football

The Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) is in full preparation for its busiest summer yet with a number of international tournaments and games in the coming months.

The U15 Girls, U17 Girls, U20 Women’s Teams and U23 Men’s Team will play tournaments this summer and the Men’s Senior Team is preparing for the CONCACAF Nations League games in the closing months of the year.

“The level of activity in our National Programs at this time is time that we have had our National Football Program active across so many different ages is unprecedented. This is the first time that we have had our National Football Program active across so many different age groups and including both boys and girls teams, said CIFA President Alfredo Whittaker.

Whittaker said that one of the first items in his agenda when elected as CIFA President at the end of 2017 was to put effective structures in place for the entire National Football programme.

“It has not been easy and it was through the efforts of many stakeholders including team coaches, team managers and volunteers but we can all be proud now that so many Caymanians are actively training or competing to represent their country,” he said.

“When it comes to representing the Cayman Islands in the football world, this summer is a huge one for us and we are encouraging the public to show their support for the country as we are having our most talented footballers on the field,” the CIFA President added.

Cayman Islands U15 footballers participate in a moment of silence ahead of their opening game of the Cayman Islands U15 Youth Cup in June.

In early June, the U15 Boys competed in the Cayman Islands U15 Youth Cup as part of their preparations for the CONCACAF U15 Boys Tournament in August.

CIFA is also in the process of organising the Cayman Island U20 Women’s National team to prepare for the CONCACAF U20 Women’s Championship in July and the U17 Girls National Team has been training together for the past year leading up to the CONCACAF U17 Women’s Championship in August.

Many members of the Cayman Islands Men’s U23 National Team also recently played in a pair friendly matches against Cuba National Team with an excellent performance.
