Competitions Committee to decide on abandoned match

Elite midfielder Rene Carter tries to evade CASC's Kyle Santamaria

The Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) Competitions Committee will rule on whether Elite Sports Club will be awarded a win or whether the match with Cayman Athletic will continue.

The match at the Annex on 15 January was called-off in the 35th minute by referee Keeble Knight (verify) after Cayman Athletic Technical Director Ernie ‘Gillie’ Seymour refused to leave the playing area.

Irate that young star Kareem Foster was being fouled without the referee blowing his whistle, Seymour exchanged words with the official, who ordered him to leave the bench. Seymour initially refused and then left but said he would return to the playing area because he would not let the game continue with the quality of officiating.

After moments of confusion and repeated pleas for the game to continue, Knight stood by his decision and the game was called off with Elite SC leading 2-0. Benjamin Cupid and Christopher Reeves combined to set up an easy finish for Andres Ruiz in the 25th. Two minutes later, a speedy Raul Rodriguez flew down the left wing before firing his shot into the back of the net for the second.

A CIFA official told CaymanSportsBuzz.com that the Competitions Committee will be called upon to make a ruling. The options before that panel are (1) resume the match with 15 minutes left on the clock; or (2) award the match to Elite, who were leading at the time and because it was a Cayman Athletic representative that was involved in the incident that led to the match being abandoned.

A ruling on the matter is expected later this week.
