A busy football weekend

It’s shaping up to be a busy weekend on football pitches across the Cayman Islands this weekend, with the CIFA First Division starting and the CIFA Women’s Charity Shield also being played, as the Cayman Premier League season enters its fifth week.

First up is Cayman Premier League action under the lights at the Annex Friday night, 28 October. Sunset FC and Cayman Athletic kick-off at 7:30 p.m. in a new initiative to play some fixtures on Friday nights, in a bid by the Cayman Islands Football Association to draw more fans back to the game.

North Side missed out on the top flight after losing in the playoff to Sunset FC.

Also on Saturday is the start of the CIFA First Division 2016-17 season with three fixtures. The Annex will host two games, starting at 5:45 p.m. when George Town SC faces Savannah Tigers FC. That will be followed by North Side FC vs East End United FC at 8:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Future SC and Alliance FC will meet at Ed Bush Sports Complex at 5:45 p.m. Cayman Brac FC has a bye on the opening weekend.

The women’s football season opens with the Charity Shield Match when defending Women’s Premier League champions and Women’s FA Cup champions Sunset FC meets Scholars International. The match begins at 4:45 p.m. at Ed Bush Sports Complex.

With the Friday night fixture, there will only be three Cayman Premier League games on Sunday. Latinos FC, which won its first game of the season last weekend, squares off against Roma United, who are coming off back-to-back losses. Kick-off is 4:45 p.m. at the Annex. That will be followed at 7:00 p.m. by Bodden Town FC against Academy SC. Bodden Town is tied with Elite SC atop the table on nine points but is second due to Elite’s better goal difference.

Scholars and Elite will meet again after facing each other in the Charity Shield.

Meantime, Elite SC gets a rematch against West Bay rivals, Scholars International, at Ed Bush Sports Complex at 7:00 p.m. The two sides met in the Men’s Charity Shield on 25 September, when two-time defending champions, Scholars, won 2-0. Scholars is third in the table after winning consecutive matches, having started the season with a loss and a draw after the Charity Shield triumph. Elite has won three straight.

There will be no CUC Primary Football League (PFL) and Girls Primary Football League fixtures this weekend due to the mid-term break for schools. League action resumes on 5 November.
