Academy are Men’s FA Cup champions

Academy Sports Club hoisted the CIFA Men’s FA Cup Sunday night, 15 April, after a tough 1-0 win against Elite Sports Club at the Annex.

The difference came in the 62nd minute when last season’s Cayman Sports Buzz co-Footballer of the Year, Jonah Ebanks found the back of the net. Jabari Campbell inbounded the ball to Romario Dixon, who collected it on the right wing, made space and played a through ball to Mark Ebanks inside the 18-yard box, who chipped it to Jonah Ebanks for the finish.

Elite had a good chance of equalising late via a Dwayne Wright free kick from about 25 yards out but a spectacular save from Daniel Woodhall maintained his clean sheet and helped secure the hardware for his side.

“I am really pleased and proud for our team, from the players to the countless others who have invested their time and effort into making this happen. Whilst we are delighted to win our first trophy, we also understand this has to be just the start, and moving forward we want to win even more trophies and join the top team’s of Cayman football, being frequent trophy winners,” coach Jack Brazil told CaymanSportsBuzz.com.

He also extended commiserations to Elite, who he said were excellent on the night. “It was great to share the pitch with another fantastic footballing team who took the defeat with such grace and humility,” he said.

Next up on the senior men’s 2017/18 domestic football calendar is the CIFA President’s Cup with opening round games starting on 22 April.
