Cayman women in contention on the sand
- Updated: 27 June 2017

Both Cayman Islands women’s teams remain in contention for a berth in the semifinals after two days of play in the beach volleyball competition at the NatWest Island Games being held in the Swedish island of Visby.
Stefania Gandolfi, who won gold two years ago in Jersey with Jessica Wolfenden, is teamed with Heather Thompson this time around. After two days of play, they sit third in the standings with two wins and two loses. One of those wins came against the other Cayman pairing of Marissa Harrison and Ileann Powery on Monday, 26 June.
In the all-Cayman showdown, Gandolfi and Thompson won after losing the first set 17-21 and claiming the next two 22-20 and 15-13. They also defeated the Jersey team of Luisa da Silva Abreu and Karolina Zablocka, again coming from a set down – 16-21, 21-18, 15-9.
After winning their only match on Sunday, Harrison and Powery lost both matches on the second day. Their other defeat came at the hands of Sofia Uddin and Sofia Wahlen of Gotland (21-17, 21-8). They are fifth in the standings.
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday, as they battle for top four finishes in the group stage. The top quartet advances to the semifinals on Thursday.
