BT wins 9th in a row, Roma comes to life

Bodden Town FC appears to be in cruise control towards a league title after their ninth straight win in the 2016/17 Cayman Premier League season on Sunday, 19 March, while their nearest rivals gave ground in their chase.

The early match at the Annex pitted the teams at either end of the table against each other, with Bodden Town FC facing Cayman Athletic, whose play on the day did not reflect a team in the relegation zone.

Karl Solomon has played well for BTFC all season.

The teams played pretty even but a defensive lapse in the 20th minute granted Theron Wood an opportunity that he did not turn down, giving Bodden Town the lead.

Coach Elbert McLean’s side knows how to preserve a lead and that’s what they did, as they held on for the 1-0 victory over Athletic.

Meantime, Elite Sports Club ceded ground in the standings, failing to maximise on points for the second straight week. After losing to Bodden Town a week earlier, they were held to a scoreless draw by Academy Sports Club at the Ed Bush Sports Complex.

In the other game of the evening, Roma United and Sunset FC squared off under the lights at the Annex. Both teams came in knowing a win would give them the edge over the other in the battle to avoid the relegation play-off.

It was a spirited Roma side that took the pitch and came away with a 6-0 win thanks to a hat-trick from Dexter Sharpe (10 min, 45+1 min, 50 min) and a brace from captain Gawayne Speed (29 min, 80 min). Kimani Finn also scored from the penalty spot.
