BTFC, Academy book semi-final berths

Bodden Town FC edged Elite SC in the FA Cup Quarterfinals.

Bodden Town Football Club and Academy Sports club have secured their spots in the semi-finals of the Cayman Islands Football Association’s 2016/17 Men’s FA Cup.

The first of two games at the Annex on Sunday, 4 June, featured the top two teams in the Cayman Premier League this season: champions Bodden Town FC and runners-up Elite Sports Club.

Bodden Town FC – 1, Elite SC – 0

Kareem James found the back of the net for Bodden Town.

During the first 45 minutes both teams pressed hard for the advantage but were unable to do so, despite few opportunities. Coaches Elbert McLean and Greg Ebanks took their sides to the changing rooms at the half without score.

The situation changed when Bodden Town FC was granted a free kick about 30 yards out from the Elite goal. Ricoh Brown stepped up to the ball and curled it to the far post. Andre McFarlane headed it toward the goal and Danner Taylor was unable to gather it cleanly before Kareem James knocked it into the back of the net. Taylor, the Elite netminder, later complained to referee Swason Owen that he had been interfered with but to no avail – the score after 65 minutes: Bodden Town FC 1, Elite SC 0.

Things got chippy and physical with Owen issuing six yellow cards. This though, did not take away from solid play by both sides. It was always going to be a close game and in the end, Bodden Town held on for the 1-0 win.

Academy SC – 5, Future SC – 2

In the nightcap at the Annex, premier league side Academy SC took on Future Sports Club, which narrowly missed out on a shot at promotion from the CIFA First Division.

Rohan Williams put Academy out front in the 4th minute. Tevin Yen equalised for Future in the 18th before Williams added another in the 38th. Jonah Ebanks also scored for Academy five minutes before the break to give Academy a 3-1 lead at the half.

The scoresheet remained unmarked until the 81st minute when Mark Ebanks cut Academy’s lead to one goal. Three minutes later, Romario Dixon scored Academy’s fourth and then secured his brace in the 89th.

Both Bodden Town FC and Academy SC will have to wait until next weekend to find out who they will play in the last four.

In other quarter-final match-ups, Scholars International faces Cayman Brac FC on Saturday, 10 June at Ed Bush Sports Complex starting at 8:00 p.m.

UPDATE: Cayman Athletic and Sunset FC will now face-off at the Annex Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

The matches were delayed to accommodate the CIFA promotion/relegation playoff between Sunset FC and Cayman Brac FC on 3 June, which Sunset FC won 5-0 to remain in the Cayman Premier League (see separate article).
