Cayman Premier League kicks off this weekend

A full slate of matches is scheduled for the opening weekend of the Cayman Premier League this coming Sunday, 2 October.

The scheduled released by the Cayman Islands Football Association on Monday shows all eight Premier League teams in action, with double-headers at two venues.

Sunset FC, which avoided relegation by beating North Side FC in a playoff at the end of last season, faces Academy Sports Club at the Annex at 4:45 p.m. At the same time, Elite SC and Bodden Town FC meet at Ed Bush Sports Complex in West Bay.

The late kick-offs at 7:00 p.m. feature newly promoted Latinos FC and Cayman Athletic at the Annex, while defending champions Scholars International open their quest for a third straight title against Roma United at Ed Bush Sports Complex.

The initial fixtures list features two venues – the Annex and Ed Bush. CIFA 1st Vice President, Bruce Blake, indicated a third venue at Haig Bodden Sports Complex in Bodden Town, could be added to a revised schedule as early as November, if upgrades to the field are completed by then.

Cayman Premier League fixtures are scheduled to be played weekly through May 2017, with a few breaks including international match day on 13 November, a five-week Christmas break after matches on 4 December and resuming on 15 January, 2017.

A new initiative features some games being played on Friday nights at the Annex. CIFA President Lee Ramoon said this is being done to help boost attendance at matches. The first of these matches is between Sunset FC and Cayman Athletic on 28 October.

The quarterfinals of the CIFA President’s Cup are scheduled for 11 December, with semifinals on 5 and 19 February, 2017. The finals are due to be played on Wednesday, 1 March, 2017.

The FA Cup begins in April.
