George Town continues undefeated run

George Town Sports Club remained unbeaten through five matches in the 2016-17 CIFA First Division season, after a 74th minute goal put them ahead of their closest rivals North Side.

Playing at the Ed Bush Sports Complex Saturday night (21 January), the game featured the newly relegated George Town side against the high-scoring North Side club that just missed out on promotion to the Cayman Premier League at the end of last season.

Even before the whistle, North Side had an uphill battle due to starting the game two players short due to late arrivals. That void was exploited by George Town, who attacked the goal in the first minute. Keeper Timothy Wesley didn’t make a clean save of a shot fired in from the left and Tex Whitelock was there to ensure George Town’s effort counted when he tapped it home.

North Side was not deterred and their aggression paid off in the 20th minute. Guiton King expertly placed a corner to the far post and Christopher Kerr was there to head it past Estanislao Peralta for the equaliser. (see video below)

Whitelock missed a chance two minutes later from point blank range, when he failed to get a clean finish.

At times, George Town appeared to be out of sorts and lacking chemistry they showed early in the season but that improved as the game went on.

Another effort by Whitelock to put George Town ahead in the 33rd ended with Wesley making the save.

North Side’s Guiton King sees off a challenge from George Town’ Junior Welcome.

North Side jumped ahead just before the break when the duo of King and Floyd McKenzie broke down the George Town defence and McKenzie scored his seventh goal in as many games. North Side up 2-1 at the half.

King had a chance to stretch the lead as play resumed but what would have been his 11th tally of the season wound up being a near miss from a free kick.

In the 49th, George Town’s Leon Whittaker pressed forward on the left wing and beat the keeper despite the tough angle and the scores were level.

The lead for the club from the capital was almost a certainty a while later when Whitelock pulled Wesley out of position and placed the ball past him but King, defending the goal line, got a boot to the shot to deny them the advantage.

With neither side appearing willing to share the points, aggression toward the goal was the order of the day but to no avail until the 74th minute when George Town was awarded a free kick about 30 yards out. As he has done all season, defender Ariel Tatum stepped up and took the kick. He curled the shot through a hole in the defence and past a diving Wesley for the winner. (see video below)

George Town picked up their fifth win, while North Side surrenders second place to Future with the loss.
