Pan Am Squash Championships underway

Play opened on Sunday, 26 August, in the 2018 Pan American Squash Championships with top players in this hemisphere gathered at South Sound Squash Club.
Representing the Cayman Islands against teams from 19 other countries are: Women – Eilidh Bridgeman, Samantha Hennings, Jade Pitcairn and Marlene West; Men – Jake Kelly, Julian Jervis, David Pitcairn and Cameron Stafford.
Bridgeman, Stafford, and Jervis were among those winning their opening matches on the first day of singles play.
In the women’s draw, Bridgeman defeated Camilla Gallegos of Chile 11-8, 11-7, 11-1 to advance to the second round, where she will face Megan Best of Barbados on Monday. Jade Pitcairn fell to Maria Paula Moya of Colombia 11-4, 11-8, 14-12.
In the men’s draw, Stafford took care of business against Neville Sorrentino of the British Virgin Islands, winning 11-0, 11-5, 11-4. Jervis was made to work for his win, holding off Jaimie Pinto of Chile in a tough five-game affair to win 9-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 15-13. Kelly put up a fight before winding up on the losing end against Brazil’s Diego Gobbi (11-1, 8-11, 11-3, 11-4) and Pitcairn was beaten by American Timothy Brownell in straight sets (11-1, 11-1, 11-2).
Singles play continues Monday morning with doubles play also getting underway.
Seven gold medals are up for grabs in men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, as well as mixed doubles, and men and women team titles.
The tournament wraps up Saturday.
